How does a catalytic converter work?

The neutralization of toxic substances such as nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide can take place if catalytic converters are used for this purpose. These ensure that carbon monoxide is almost fully converted into carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides into nitrogen. A small part of the fuel that was not fully combusted during the combustion process in the engine compartment and that entered the exhaust system is similarly rendered harmless in the catalytic converter.
